The Gamma Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. turned out to assist the Austin homeless population brave the cold winter temperatures and area-wide hard freeze that caused many to seek shelter. On Saturday January 10, 2015 the fraternity distributed 50 blankets and clean water under the bridge located at IH-35 & 7th Street to aid and assist those in need. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity coordinated the distribution with other organizations that are distributing blankets to ensure that there would not be any duplication in the distribution process. This appeal is a response to an annual need and is humanitarian in nature.
Since blankets, shawls and sweaters are a long-lasting item; these will be usable by all for at least a few years. Distributing with blankets will help take care of a basic need for protection against the cold. In addition, since most of the homeless are often physically weak, these blankets will help prevent further health problems. Blankets, shawls, sweaters and socks are a necessity for them to stay warm.
All of the recipient families were very happy and thankful to the fraternity for providing such high quality large winter blankets. One of the recipients had just given birth to a baby boy and received blankets for her family was so happy that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity created this worthwhile community project.
